African nutritionists want to relieve double burden

Kigali – 2 September 2019. Africa is hit by the double burden of malnutrition. Alongside persistent undernutrition, the figures for obesity and lifestyle diseases are rising at an alarming rate.

At the African conference on Nutrition of the Federation of African Nutrition Societies (FANUS) in Kigali, 26-29 August 2019, Choices had organized a symposium in the plenary scientific program of the conference. The Choices symposium positioned the double burden of malnutrition as the upcoming key nutrition issue of the continent, and discussed actions to improve food choice and nutrient intake such as the Nigerian heart logo, the Good Food logo in Zambia and the Choices program, as well as collaboration with the food industry for example in national SUN Business networks.

WHO: MORE SUGAR REDUCTION CRUCIAL TO PREVENT CHILDHOOD OBESITY

WHO global nutrition director, Dr. Francesco Branca, called for a boost in sugar reduction in food products to add to the prevention of overweight and non-communicable diseases. The call was presented in a video message at the Choices International symposium at the Asian Congress on Nutrition ACN2019 on 6 August in Bali.
