Report 2019 on the scientific background of positive nutrition labeling

June 7th, 2019

The Choices report “Positive nutrition labeling – a scientific background, edition 2019” summarizes the main peer-reviewed publications and grey literature on different aspects of positive nutrition labeling. After an overview of countries that have implemented positive labels, the report shows the strong scientific substantiation of positive labeling. It includes research findings on the implementation, the use of nutrition criteria for other purposes than labeling, on logo design and the potential effects on nutrient intake. Many studies on consumers effects are summarized, such as logo awareness in different countries, consumer perceptions of logo-bearing products, and the effects on actual shopping behaviour and sales. An important aim when introducing positive labeling is often to stimulate and guide reformulation and innovation by the industry. Studies in various countries on this topic are summarized. The report is freely available to download.
